I open the broadcast by reading an excerpt from my memoir, Getting to Ellen: A Memoir about Love, Honesty and Gender Change, recounting how the tragic events of 9/11 became a pivotal wake-up call in my personal journey toward living authentically as my true self. For the Big Interview, I am joined by AM950 producer Brett Johnson and Phillip Anthony, host of The Downright Upright Show, to share their firsthand memories of that day—from high school classrooms in Minnesota to the grounded flights and falling soot across New York City—and to reflect on how 9/11 reshaped American politics, security, and division. Finally, I close with “Random Acts,” proposing why America urgently needs a South Africa–style Truth and Reconciliation Commission to bridge our deep divides, listen to each other’s pain, and heal.
