The Illegal Trans Woman – Ep. 67: West Virginia Legal Blows and the Fight for Assigned Media

I’m diving deep into a West Virginia federal appeals court ruling that has me absolutely floored. The court decided to deny Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming surgeries, and what’s truly chilling is the judge’s reasoning. He essentially argued that it’s rational for a legislature to encourage citizens to “appreciate” their sex rather than becoming “disdainful” of it. This feels like a terrifying attempt to legislate how we’re even allowed to think about our own identities.

For the Big Interview, I’m joined by Evan Urquhart, the creator of Assigned Media. Evan is doing incredible work, and we had a great conversation about his path from fiction writing to journalism and how he navigates the tension between reporting and activism. We also touched on the situation in Kansas where trans people are losing their driver’s licenses overnight due to new laws.

In Random Acts, I talk about my upcoming workshop in Chaska and my recent trip to Des Moines, where I finally got to hug the lovely Pastor Luke. I also share why I’m heading to Sioux Falls to speak for the Transformation Project. Most importantly, I explain why I don’t have a “Plan B”. I’m staying right here to keep fighting with all of you.
