The Illegal Trans Woman – Ep. 68: Zen Buddhism and the Fight for Trans Rights in Idaho

This week’s Big Story is a series of draconian hits to the trans community, starting in Idaho where the legislature passed HB 752, a bathroom bill that attaches a felony charge and up to five years in prison for a second “offense” of a trans person simply using a restroom that aligns with their identity. It’s a terrifying escalation of state-sponsored discrimination. From there, I discuss a heartbreaking Texas Supreme Court ruling that allows Attorney General Ken Paxton to subpoena PFLAG records to hunt for families and doctors involved in gender-affirming care. In the midst of this, I’m joined by the wonderful Busho Lahn, a senior Zen priest and author, for a Big Interview about how the Buddhist concepts of impermanence and “Buddha Nature” offer a powerful, compassionate path for those of us navigating a world that insists we are “static” or “wrong”. Finally, in Random Acts, I talk about the incredible energy at a Sioux Falls fundraiser for the Transformation Project Advocacy Network and the relief of successfully launching my first “Choosing Hope” workshop.
